Is CompassDocs really free?
Yes. The Community edition is free and open-source under the AGPL-3.0, with unlimited users and documents and no feature gates on the essentials—AI search, the editor, roles, approvals, backups, and your own domain are all included. You can self-host it forever at no cost.
What exactly does Enterprise add?
Enterprise layers on the identity, compliance, and training features larger organizations need: single sign-on over SAML 2.0 or OIDC (with a one-click Microsoft Entra setup), a people directory synced from Microsoft 365, Entra group sync for private spaces, SCIM provisioning (automatic account lifecycle from Entra), policy acknowledgements with a central compliance portal (org-wide progress, one-click requests and reminders, auditor CSV exports), training & onboarding (turn any published doc into a slide deck, bundle decks into onboarding programs, auto-assign new hires, and track completion with auditable records), streaming audit-log export (CSV/JSON with date and category filters), and priority support. It’s the same app you already self-host—you just apply a license to unlock these.
How does the Enterprise license work technically?
It’s an offline, cryptographically signed key. You paste it into Settings → License and your server validates it locally against a built-in public key—there’s no license server to call and nothing that stops working if you’re offline or air-gapped. Read more in the docs.
How is Enterprise billed, and what does support cost?
Enterprise is a flat $599 per year per install—no per-user pricing, no seat counting, unlimited users. Checkout is fully self-serve: buy online, pay by card, and your signed license key lands in your inbox automatically—renewals email you a fresh key each year. If you want a direct line to us, add dedicated support for $3,000 per year: a named contact and a 48-hour response commitment on every ticket. Nonprofit and education discounts are available on request.
What happens when a license expires?
Enterprise features keep working through a 14-day grace period after the expiry date, then switch off automatically. Your core CompassDocs install, your documents, and all Community features keep running normally—nothing is held hostage.
Can I try Enterprise before buying?
Yes—reach out and we’ll issue a time-limited trial license so you can validate SSO, directory sync, and group sync against your identity provider.
